Biographie
Ameer Jabarah is an Iraqi-Belgian actor, filmmaker, and visual artist whose work moves across cinema, theatre, documentary, video art, and installation. His artistic journey began in Iraq, where he studied theatre at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, before continuing his training in Belgium in video art and visual cinematography at the École de photographie et de techniques visuelles Agnès Varda in Brussels.
Jabarah began his screen career with Ahlaam , followed by Son of Babylon , and has since appeared in several productions across Europe and the Middle East. He is particularly known for his role in The Journey Iraq’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, for which he received a nomination for the Muhr Feature Award for Best Actor. His film work also includes in the Sands of Babylon, Under the Safe Sky, The Last Displaced, and IRKALLA: Dreams of Gilgamesh.
Alongside his work as an actor, Jabarah has developed a significant practice behind the camera. He has worked as a directing consultant on projects in Iraq and France, served as casting director on The President’s Cake, which won the prestigious Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and contributed as a directing consultant to international productions, including Apple’s series Prime Target.
His documentary and visual work reflects a sustained interest in memory, exile, identity, friendship, and the emotional traces of displacement. His short documentary Anmar explores friendship and exile through a quiet, restrained visual language. The film was selected for the Millenium International Documentary Film Festival and Festival de cinéma En ville, shortlisted for the “Jeune Cinéma Belge” competition, and nominated for the 2025 Magritte Awards in the category of Best Documentary Short Film.
Through a multidisciplinary practice that brings together performance, filmmaking, documentary, and installation, Ameer Jabarah continues to develop a personal cinematic language marked by restraint, visual precision, and a deep engagement with memory, identity, and displacement. He lives and works between Brussels and Baghdad.
